Tuberculosis
Although tuberculosis (TB) is one of North Carolina’s leading infectious causes of death, cases continue to decline but are far from eradicated. It is possible to prevent TB disease by providing medical treatment to individuals with latent TB infection (LTBI) so that they do not develop active TB disease. Although TB disease can sometimes be fatal, prompt treatment and appropriate medication can cure it.
Since 1980, the number of new cases has declined by 4% each year in North Carolina. The number of new cases decreased from 296 to 185 between 2010 and 2019. TB cases in North Carolina have declined significantly due to the state and local resources used to improve the TB program.
TB is a public health threat in North Carolina that needs to be controlled by reducing the number of new cases of TB and blocking its spread to the general population.
TB screenings or skin tests required for work or school cost $35. However, there is no charge if you have TB symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has active TB. If your test is positive, a Public Health Nurse will provide free follow-up services, including counseling, chest X-rays, referrals, contact tracing, and medication if needed.

Appointments
Walk-ins are welcome—no appointment needed. TB skin tests are given Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and Wednesdays until 3:00 PM. Clients must return in 72 hours for accurate evaluation by a nurse.
**Please note: We cannot give you a live vaccine within 28 days of a TB test unless they were given on the same day.
Immunizations
Vaccines are one of the greatest achievements in public health. They prevent the spread of infectious diseases, save lives, and reduce long-term health complications. Thanks to vaccination programs, many diseases that once posed serious risks—especially to infants, children, and older adults—have been greatly reduced or even eliminated in the U.S.
However, the viruses and bacteria that cause these illnesses still exist. Staying up to date on recommended vaccines is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Vaccines Are Safe and Effective
- Thoroughly tested: Vaccines must pass years of research and testing before being approved by the FDA.
• Continuously monitored: The CDC and FDA closely track all licensed vaccines for safety.
• Mild side effects: Most people only experience brief soreness, redness, or swelling. Serious reactions are rare.
• Protective and preventive: Vaccines work with your immune system to reduce your risk of infection and related complications.
How Vaccines Protect Your Health
- Hepatitis B vaccine lowers your risk of liver cancer.
- HPV vaccine helps prevent cervical and other types of cancer.
- Flu vaccine can reduce the risk of flu-related heart attacks and complications for those with diabetes or lung conditions.
Talk with your healthcare provider about which vaccines are right for you based on your age, health, and medical history.
